An exhibition by Mik Hartshorn Looking at the way we live our lives and the whole idea of the dwelling, I have come to realise what an interior oriented society we are. We create an artificial environment inside our little houses and then try to disguise the fact by growing indoor plants and hanging baskets. The house becomes our refuge from which we may look out through our doors and windows. However from the outside, windows lose their transparency, looking into see the inside all we see is a reflection of the outside. Windows and doors are oft used metaphors and have come to represent many things. They can be man-made openings through which we may pass or peer, or portals in walls behind which we hide. They can be windows onto the past or openings into another reality through which we might look and wonder. But are they entrances or exits, escape hatches or windows of opportunity? Do we fear the tap at the window or long for the knock at the door? The doors of perception should never be kept closed. |
