A domain is an address your computer uses to get files from another computer. It is often referred to as "going somewhere". You type the address into your browser, or click on a bookmark or link, and you "go there".

So where is the web site? To be available 24 hours a day, a web site has to be on a computer that is on and attached via cables to the internet, all the time. These computers are called Web Servers or servers. Web sites are created on a personal computer and then uploaded to a web server.

A server needs to be fast and reliable with power backup.

To make your domain, and hence web site, available to the internet you need a web server to use.

Web Hosting companies have the physical infrastructure in place and provide space on their servers to their clients. The cost of buying, setting up and maintaining a web server would be prohibitive to most individuals and small, medium business. Use a hosting comany and you pay only for what you need.

All of the maintenance and upgrades of server software and hardware is handled by the hosting company.
